Larry Waldrip, 87, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2023, in McKinney, Texas, where he had been a resident since May 1, 2021.
He was born March 1,1936 in the Graham Chapel community to John Marlin and Ethel Lula (Roberts) Waldrip. He attended Graham Chapel School before attending and graduating from Post High School in 1954. He played basketball and football, making friends who continued to stay in touch until the time of his death.
Following a fall in his home on March 8, 2021, he crossed paths with some of the most devoted caregivers in that profession. Individuals who are passionate about their chosen field. They nurtured and loved him as though he were family.
When he made the decision to leave us, his last words to family gathered around him were "Take care of each other." Larry loved his family and was their biggest fan as they attained success in their lives.
Having known the struggles of a limited education, he encouraged his sons to pursue theirs, hoping they would find fulfillment in their chosen field. Larry had a servant's heart. He was a Post volunteer fireman for 35 years. He served two terms as a councilman for the City of Post. He was a little league coach/manager for eleven years, long after his sons outgrew the sport. Most of those years were spent coaching the Fire Department Cardinals.
In 1995 he retired from the Texas Department of Transportation in Post, and spent the next thirty years tending his pecan orchard, traveling and enjoying time with family. He attended the Presbyterian Church in Post, where he felt a sense of belonging.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-five and one-half years, Linda Moreland Waldrip; his sons, Mike and wife Lisa, of McKinney; Bruce and wife LaTressa of Plainview; grandchildren, John Miles Waldrip and wife Rosemary of Plano; James Michael Waldrip and wife Katherine of Austin; Melissa Bell and husband Chris of Lubbock; TeAda Hair and husband Michael of Andrews; and Sara Daley of Lubbock; great grandchildren, Whitman Michael Waldrip, Conner Bruce Hair and Saylor Celeste Bell. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law, Buddy Moreland (Mary Ann) of Aubrey, Sisters-in-law Billie Proctor (Lee) of Del Rio, and Yvonne Hill of Sour Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Tommy Hill and sister-in-law Margaret Wilks.
Following a private graveside service at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning December 9, 2023, a reception will be held at Trailblazers in Post from 11:00 to 1:00. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Post Little League, 308 West 5th Street, Post, TX 79356
