Melvin Douglas Britton, of Post, Texas, passed away on October 15, 2026, in Post at the age of 83. He was born on January 23, 1943, in Monroe, Louisiana.
Melvin lived a life marked by devotion to his family, deep patriotism, and an unwavering belief in hard work. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of SFC, and he carried a true love for military service throughout his life. That spirit of dedication shaped the way he lived each day. He believed in working hard and was known as someone who would do almost anything to avoid taking a day off, all the way to the end.
On June 26, 1964, he married Barbara Shumard in Post. Their marriage was a lasting and cherished bond that spanned 60 years, until Barbara’s passing on June 23, 2024. He missed her deeply every day after her death, and the love they shared remained a constant part of his heart. We believe she was there waiting for him. So It is a comfort to think of them together again.
Above all, Melvin adored his family. He loved his grandchildren dearly, took great joy in them, and held a special affection for his dogs as well. His steady presence, strong values, and faithful love will be remembered by those who knew him best.
He is survived by his son, Randy Britton, and Randy’s wife, Raquel, of Post; and by his daughter, Kimberly Burtch. He also leaves behind six beloved grandchildren: Cayce Britton, Cooper Britton, Austin Britton and his wife, Elizabeth, Brandon Britton and his wife, Abby, Michael Burtch and his wife, Nikki, and Dyllan Burtch. Each of them was an important part of his life, and his love for his family was evident in the pride and care he gave so freely.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Shumard Britton; his father, James Ellis Britton; his mother, Callie Long Britton; and his sisters, Pam McClain and Gloria Braddock.
Visitation will be held on Saturday October 17, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Hudman Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Sunday October 18, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Terrace Cemetery with Cris Downer officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Hudman Funeral Home.
Melvin will be remembered as a man of loyalty, strength, and enduring love—a husband who never stopped loving his wife, a father and grandfather who treasured his family, and a man whose work ethic and service to his country reflected the depth of his character. His memory will remain a blessing to all who loved him.
